Tip #1

This course is perfect for beginners and takes the student from novice to expert in just three days.

Tip #2
A good fish and chip shop insurance policy can reduce the risks of operating your takeaway business. Get millions of pounds in cover for public liability and employer liability insurance, plus fire, storm, flood and equipment failure insurance. There are many options and riders available to get even more insurance, to cover all the possible major risks your shop might encounter.

Tip #3
Most fish and chip shop owners see an advantage in being located near a residential community. While being near businesses delivers lunch traffic, business areas offer very little traffic to your business for dinner or during the late evening hours. It is a good idea to study the potential locations for your fish and chip shop carefully before investing in a location.

Tip #4
The secret to cooking fish and chips in vegetable oil without getting a high fat content is to completely enclose the fish with batter. When the battered fish hits the hot oil in the frier the fish will be completely encased within the pocket of batter so that the fish itself will not soak up the oil, and the batter will shed most of the oil if it is allowed to drain properly. A serving of fish and chips fried in this way has only 5.5 grams of fat. That is lower than any other fast food meal.

Tip #5
The Federation of Fish Friers also offers a one day continual education class. The class is designed to help you build your business and acts as a refresher course for the first class. Throughout your years of work in the fish and chip industry, the Federation of Fish Friers is always there to help you.

Tip #6
Another helpful organisation for fish and chip shop owners is called Seafish. The Seafish organisation helps the seafood food service industry with marketing and research. They offer free help in marketing your business, including promotional materials, and marketing strategy advice. They also offer training courses for fish and chip shop entrepreneurs.

Tip #7

Call the environmental health inspectors and invite them to come out and view your shop before you stop fitting it out. That way they can tell you exactly what you need to have installed and how much of what is already present is acceptable to use. They can also inform you of all the regulations that apply to your shop. This can not only save you time, money and effort, it can help you start out on the right foot with the inspectors.

Tip #8
Enter the National Fish & Chip Awards contest sponsored and judged by the Seafish Organization, the National Federation and the National Edible Oils Distribution Association. You can get an entry form and get details from the Seafish organisation’s website. This site also features a lot of fish and chip shop tips and facts.
